Olms can only be found in the darkest parts of Europe: underwater caves and underground rivers. They have no need for sight and can therefore use the movements and soundwaves in the water to help them find food. Water is, in fact, vital to their existence. They spend one-hundred percent of their time in H2O. The darkness is of no importance to the Olm due to its blindness and extrasensory ears. Being underground helps the water that the Olm's live in maintain a constant temperature, which is a very good thing considering the Olm's trouble with adapting to even the tiniest changes in water temperature.
Olms are especially apparent in the Isonzo river basin around Italy's Trieste, as well as the waters in south Slovenia, Herzegovina, and south-western Croatia.
